  • Guess who was suddenly reminded they had a Wii when their PlayStation died? That's right. This idiot right here. So how about those Virtual Console games? I'm looking strictly for RPGs that aren't Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger.
  • The list of Virtual Console games for Wii U in North America names releases of vintage games. Emulated by the Wii U Virtual Console, these releases take advantage of the console's unique features, such as Off TV Play with the Wii U GamePad and posting to Miiverse.
  • Best 90's game and virtual console game by far! The only games better than Mario 64 are Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2. Mario 64 is the best game of the 90's! The game that showed the world how 3D gaming was done. Yet another Mario masterpiece. Super Mario 64 is perfect! It sure deserved to be on the Wii Virtual Console.
  • May 14, 2016  Despite offering far fewer Virtual Console games than Wii did (so far), the Wii U Virtual Console is denser with quality. We've picked out what we think are the top 10 titles. But these are far.

There are a lot of great games for the Nintendo Wii, but you don't necessarily need to visit a store to get them. Many, many hours of fun can be found in the Virtual Console shop. Here, Nintendo has placed hundreds of classic games for retired systems, such as the original NES, the TurboGrafx-16, and SEGA's blockbuster 16-bit console, Genesis. Within seconds, you can download a classic for a handful of Nintendo Points and relive gaming's yesteryear highlights, such as the very first Super Mario Bros. or the home version of the arcade classic Donkey Kong. With so many titles across so many systems, there is literally something for everybody, whether you like adventures, action games, or shooters.
Sifting through all of the Virtual Console titles is fun, but it can be a little overwhelming, especially if you are hearing about some of these games for the first time. There are no reviews for these games in the Virtual Console shop either, so before spending those Nintendo Points (which soon translate into real money if you aggressively download games), use our guide. We pinpoint the best of the best for many of the systems in the Virtual Console shop so you save not only money, but also time. After all, time spent browsing the Virtual Console shop is time not spent playing Super Mario World, which is a shame.

17.2 million fans cannot be wrong. That's how many copies of Super Mario Bros. 3 Nintendo has sold since the 1990 launch, making it the bestselling non-bundled videogame according to Guinness World Records. It deserves all of the success it gets, as well as its consistently high-charting on 'best of' lists, such as IGN's very own Top 100 Games, due to its brilliant platforming action and emphasis on clever exploring. Mario is back in the Mushroom Kingdom, hopping-and-bopping on Koopas and Goombas, trying to rescue Peach from the clutches of Bowser. Sure, that's the plot of the first game, but the level design here is both excellent and epic, loaded with goodies around every virtual corner.

Legend of Zelda

Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's longest-running franchises and you'll find out why it is so enduring (and endearing) by downloading the very first game in the series. This adventure through the land of Hyrule leads you deep into dungeons to fight monsters and collect treasures like the fabled Triforce, but it doesn't have the slower pacing of traditional role-playing games (RPGs) that turns off so many gamers. The overworld map is huge but manageable and, best of all, the Virtual Console version of Zelda lets you save your game anywhere, making it accessible to any gamer without needing to set aside an entire weekend. Although, you could hardly be blamed if you did.

Nintendo recently released an all-new Punch-Out!! for the Wii, which closely adheres to the gameplay of the NES original. This boxer is more of an act/react game, where you watch cues and clue telegraphed by opponents in the ring. Sidestep incoming blows and come back with a devastating uppercut to put the likes of King Hippo and Von Kaiser. The Virtual Console edition of Punch-Out!! is not the Mike Tyson edition of the game, though, so if you are looking to beat down an 8-bit Iron Mike, sorry. (Search a garage sale for an original cart instead.) The VC edition is the 'Featuring Mr. Dream' revision that followed the end of Nintendo's licensing deal with Tyson. Regardless, it's still an awesome play.

There was no shortage of cute little heroes on the NES, but Lolo may be the most adorable of all. This little blue ball with googly eyes must collect treasures on each floor of a castle to rescue his ladyfriend, Lala. Monsters like medusa heads and snakes try to thwart Lolo, but if you use your thinking cap to nab the treasures in the right order to minimize beast exposure, Lolo will eventually ascend the tower and rescue his love. This super-cute action-puzzle game will last you hours and you'll hum its theme music long after you turn off your Wii. Virtual
